Per the Braves transactions page, the Braves claimed pitcher Victor Arano and outfielder Kyle Garlick off waivers from the Phillies on Friday. With these acquisitions, the Braves’ 40-man roster is now full, meaning that any free agent signings or trades will require space to be made on the roster.

Kyle Garlick Jersey

Kyle Garlick is a 28 year old outfielder who has spent most of his career from 2015 to 2019 in the Dodgers’ organization. Garlick actually turns 29 in three days on Tuesday, January 26th. He put up fairly impressive offensive numbers in the minor leagues, and even over 53 plate appearances for the Dodgers in 2019, when he posted a 114 wRC+ for Los Angeles. Garlick has shown real power in his career and has some contact ability, although he has a high strikeout rate.

Braves Kyle Garlick Jersey

Garlick was pretty terrible over 23 plate appearances in 2020 after being traded to the Phillies, but obviously the sample was miniscule. Garlick is on the old side for a player with only 76 major league plate appearances, but it isn’t inconceivable that he could be a useful offensive piece, given his numbers from the minors. Garlick would likely fit in Atlanta as a depth outfielder with some pop in his bat off the bench.

The Braves added a pair of former Phillies off waivers Friday: outfielder Kyle Garlick and reliever Victor Arano. Both players were designated for assignment earlier in the week.

Garlick, who turns 29 in a few days, has played 42 games across the past two seasons with the Dodgers and Phillies. He was a minor leaguer with the Dodgers when Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos was part of the Los Angeles front office.

While Garlick has struggled in his short time in the majors – hitting .214/.276/.414 with three homers and 26 strikeouts against five walks in 70 at-bats – he showed promise in the minors. Garlick hit 40 homers over the 2018-19 seasons in Triple-A. He could provide some pop off the bench if he makes the season active roster.

Arano, 25, spent parts of the 2017-19 seasons with the Phillies. But he appeared in only three games in 2019 and missed last season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow. His production before the injury is intriguing: Arano had a 2.73 ERA in 60 games during the 2018 season. He boasts a career strikeout rate of 9.6 per nine innings in 73 appearances.

Both players have shown enough to warrant curiosity. The Braves will carry them into camp – which opens in less than a month – and see if either earns a spot on the roster. The team has openings on its bench and in its bullpen.

The Braves’ 40-man roster is full after the additions.

Arano is 25 year old right-handed reliever who also started his career with the Dodgers before joining Philadelphia. He will turn 26 in early February. Arano joined the Dodgers in 2013 as an international free agent, before being sent to Philadelphia in a trade in 2014 as a player to be named later. Continuing with the parallels between these two players, Arano has also had impressive numbers at times in both the minor leagues and the major league. In his major league career, he has good strikeout and walk rates with 9.64 K/9 and 2.77 BB/9. Arano debuted in 2017 and performed very well over 10.2 innings, with a 1.69 ERA and a 1.85 FIP. Arano put together a very good season in 2018 for the Phillies, with a 2.73 ERA and a 3.36 FIP over 59.1 innings, good for 0.8 fWAR. Unfortunately for Arano, he had to undergo season-ending elbow surgery after only 3 appearances in 2019 and did not play in 2020. Arano could have a real chance to make the active roster out of spring training in the bullpen. Alex Anthopoulos could be hoping to strike gold with Arano like he did with Tyler Matzek last season.

To summarize, both of these players come from the Dodgers organization originally, where Anthopoulos has a background, were traded to the Phillies, and had have had success in their respective minor league careers and during small samples in the majors. Both players will likely have a real chance to make the Braves active roster in 2021.

Pache is Atlanta’s top position-player prospect and one of the top prospects in baseball. He hasn’t played much, participating in only nine games while logging 25 at-bats, and he is slashing .120/.241/.160 with four walks and six strikeouts. Obviously the sample is miniscule, so we shouldn’t really read into the numbers. Pache is expected to come into spring training as possibly the front-runner for the starting job in centerfield for Atlanta, after he played well in relief of an injured Adam Duvall in the playoffs.

Daysbel Hernandez

Hernandez is a relief prospect who has been in the Braves’ system for a while now. He has done reasonably well in the Mexican League, pitching 8.1 innings, giving up only three earned runs, with eight strikeouts and three walks. He has given up two home runs among the seven total hits he has allowed.

Braves Johan Camargo Jersey

As some of you may have missed, Atlanta signed this 31 year old outfielder to a non-guaranteed major league contract in October. Since this is a major league deal, he is on the 40-Man roster for now. Almonte is on the same team as Jasseel De La Cruz, Yasiel Puig, and Peter O’Brien, the Toros del Este. He has taken 34 at-bats and has eight walks and an ugly slash line of .088/.118/.262. Almonte is expected to compete for a bench spot in spring training.

The LIDOM series finale reached a decisive Game 7 on Monday night and an Atlanta Braves player had a big role in the outcome.

If you’ve been desperate for baseball action like me, then hopefully you’ve enjoyed watching the Dominican League where several Atlanta Braves players have participated.

Johan Camargo and his team, Águilas Cibaeñas, were down 3-1 in the LIDOM series final but stormed back to force a Game 7 on Monday night, which they won for the championship.

The Braves utility man in Camargo played a key role early in the game both with the glove and the bat.

Womens Johan Camargo Jersey

First, there was this great catch he made in foul territory in the first inning. And then Camargoat made his presence felt with a solo home run in the third inning.

That home run from Camargo was his second of the postseason and gave his team an early lead in this decisive game.

Camargo finished the game 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored, 1 RBI, a double, and a home run.

It wasn’t always pretty for Camargo in this series final as he actually got bumped down in the lineup from fifth to seventh.

He ended up going 5-for-25 (.200) with 4 runs scored, 2 RBI, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts in the championship series.

Cheap Johan Camargo Jersey

Combining regular and postseason, Camargo went 20-for-95 (.211) with 2 home runs, 2 doubles, 10 runs scored, 12 RBI, 9 walks, and 16 strikeouts.

It certainly wasn’t pretty for Camargo, and not what the Braves were hoping to see out of him.

But getting the reps after hardly playing at all during the MLB season for the Braves was the most important thing for him — and winning a championship, no matter the level of competition, is always fun.

NEXT: Acuna Being Slighted?
Hopefully Camargo comes to spring training with the Braves energized and ready to compete. Certainly, he doesn’t have a clear spot in the starting lineup, but he’s an injury away from being called upon. We’ll need Camargo to be Camargoat at some point in 2021.
Jasseel De La Cruz

Youth Johan Camargo Jersey

De La Cruz is one of the bigger prospects from Atlanta’s organization to be playing winter ball this year. He’s only pitched in one game for 2.0 innings, but the results were solid, allowing no runs, one hit, and one walk. De La Cruz is on the 40-Man roster, so he could make an appearance for the big league club in 2021 if there are some injuries to the pitching staff.

Johan Camargo

Camargo has been anywhere from a regular starter at third base to a utility infielder on the fringe of the roster for Atlanta in his career. He is closer to the fringe of the roster at this moment, so it will be good for him to get reps in during winter ball to show his best self at spring training, where he is not be guaranteed a roster spot. Camargo has taken 52 at-bats with seven walks, good for a slash line of .212/.311/.231. The numbers aren’t great, but hopefully playing will help Johan stay sharp and in shape over the offseason.

Peter O’Brien

The former Braves spring training great Peter O’Brien is participating in the Dominican League this winter, and has taken a fairly large number of plate appearances by the standards of this league. He has 89 at-bats good for a slash line of .213/.297/.404. This doesn’t look good, but O’Brien is actually producing right about in the middle of the pack among qualified hitters in this league.

Yasiel Puig

The energetic free agent outfielder that was briefly set to be a Brave in 2020 is playing winter ball this year as he hopes to find a new team. Puig has only played in five games and taken 13 at-bats, but he has seven walks and a slash line of .231/.308/.500 over this tiny sample. These numbers probably won’t move the needle for considering signing him, but they certainly won’t hurt.

Christian Bethancourt

Bethancourt was a top prospect for Atlanta a long time ago, but was never able to really break out. He has played a decent amount in the Dominican League this season, with 68 at-bats. He has a slash line .162/.186/.250 with two walks so far. Bethancourt recently signed a minor league deal with the Phillies that included an invite to big league Spring Training.

Kevin Maitan

Maitan is the most high profile prospect stripped from the Braves in the league’s punishment for the breach of international free agent rules a few years ago. His prospect star has fallen quite a bit since he was made a free agent again and signed with the Angels. He is still only 20, but he has fallen to 23rd on MLB Pipeline’s Angel’s top 30 prospect list in what is a fairly unimpressive farm system. Maitan is slashing .222/.250/.222 over 27 at bats with only two walks in the Venezuelan league.

The Atlanta Braves continued adding depth today, with their first waiver claim of the 2020 offseason.
Just after lunch today, the Atlanta Braves official Twitter account announced that the team had claimed utility infielder Jack Mayfield off waivers from the Astros. Mayfield’s addition to the 40-man roster is the second in two days and brings the total to 38.

The departure of Charlie Culberson and Adeiny Hechavarria, and the Atlanta Braves growling frustration with Johan Camargo, meant the team needed a defensively-oriented infielder for depth.

Mayfield grew up in Del Rio, Texas, and played shortstop for Del Rio high school and earned Honorable mention on the Rawlings® and Perfect Game USA Texas Region team after graduation in 2009.

He attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman and played for the Sooners for the next four seasons. As a freshman, he played short, second, and pitched, finishing the season batting .235/.349/.294/.643 in 34 PA and pitching to a 2.47 ERA in 17 games, including five starts.

Mayfield pitched in 2011 as well, before moving to middle-infield for good in 2012, batting ..266/.338/.399/.737 in 589 PA, walking 33 times and striking out 56.

Atlanta Braves
The Braves have had an interesting offseason so far. On one hand, they have managed to add legitimate talent to an already skilled depth chart.

Atlanta reached a one-year agreement with former Rays pitcher Charlie Morton. While the 37-year-old is toward the end of his career, he is still a dangerous pitcher with a major postseason pedigree.

The team also bolstered their pitching staff by adding pitcher Drew Smyly. Despite posting an inconsistent seven-year major league career, the lefty starter enjoyed one of his best seasons in 2020.

The team has also managed to add depth in the form of RHP Josh Tomlin, RHP Luke Jackson, infielder Jack Mayfield, and OF Abraham Almonte.

Overall, the Braves have had a productive offseason. The franchise already has one of the most dangerous offenses in the league. Now, they’ve managed to add some legitimate pitching to complement their younger arms.

However, the Braves still have a noticeable gap in their lineup that was formerly held by Marcell Ozuna. The former All-Star, who was a massive part of the team’s offense in 2020, is currently a free agent. Atlanta needs to find a way to retain their star hitter or sign a comparable talent to complete their offseason. Otherwise, they will have a noticeable hole in the lineup.

Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies feel lightyears away from their breakout off seasons of years past. The team that once offering huge contracts to Bryce Harper and Zack Wheeler now find themselves in a quite rebuilding mode.

Philly was able to address their biggest need, the bullpen, by declining the option of former closer Hector Neris and trading for flamethrower lefty Jose Alvarado. They also supplemented this move with the recent signing of former closer Archie Bradley. Both of these additions will make a noticeable impact on the next incarnation of the team. Otherwise, Philadelphia has added some veterans on minor league deals and made a handful of other small moves.

However, the team also appears likely to lose superstar catcher JT Realmuto in free agency. This will have a noticeable impact on their offense and defense in 2021 and beyond. Should Realmuto spurn Philly and sign elsewhere, it would severely hamper their offseason success.

At the end of the day, the Phillies are at serious risk of losing a key member of their team in exchange for two solid relief arms. They must find a way to keep Realmuto. Or, at the very least, salvage the loss by adding someone else to fill his role.

Offseason Grade: C-

Miami Marlins
Miami has had a slow, but steady, offseason. The surprise 2020 postseason team saw their transition from rebuilder to contenders happen far quicker than anyone expected.

The franchise’s major transactions with on-field talent involve names that most baseball fans are unfamiliar with. However, the team has filled their GM position with a universally praised addition of Kim Ng.

Youth Jack Mayfield Jersey

The team needs to address holes in their bullpen. They should also be seeking depth in several other areas. However, the small market team seems to be in a good position to add players as needed later in the offseason.

Offseason Grade: B

Washington Nationals
The 2019 World Series champs seem to be preparing for another run at the postseason. Despite playing in ridiculously deep NL East, the Nats are building a win-now 2021 roster.

Washington’s most notable move was the acquisition of former All-Star 1B Josh Bell. They also added a second impact bat in OF Kyle Schwarber.

Additionally, the Nationals tendered contracts to superstars Juan Soto and Trea Turner. They also re-signed starter Joe Ross, as well as a plethora of more minor moves.

Washington expects to have their three-headed pitching monster of Max Scherzer, Patrick Corbin, and Stephen Strasburg back in full form. They have also made enough additions to complete for a playoff spot this season.

Mayfield signed with the Astros as an undrafted free agent in June 2013 and played 55 games between Rookie and A-Ball. He reached AA in 2015 and made his AAA debut the following season with Fresno in the PCL. In 2017 he split time between AA and AAA, finally moving to AAA permanently in 2018.

Braves Fill Up 40-man Roster with Two Waiver Claims
In his last two years of AAA-Ball, Mayfield posted a 278/.337/.508/.845 line that including 57 doubles, two triples, and 26 homers, walking 70 times and striking out 170 times in 910 PA, 813 AB. He split 2019 between AAA and Houston and was part of the Astros 60-player pool for 2020.

While Mayfield has shown some pop, his bat hasn’t consistently caught up with Major League pitching yet. Mayfield looks like a dependable defender at short, second, and third, something the Atlanta Braves needed after the departure of both Hechavarria and Culberson.

The Atlanta Braves can stash their new infielder at Gwinnett this year and next, as Mayfield has two option years remaining.

Mayfield is the second depth piece added in the last week. On November 13, the team signed RHP Emmanuel Ramirez to a minor league deal. Ramirez kicked around the Padres system for the past six seasons but was unable to stick at AAA. The Friars used him as a starter, and the Atlanta Braves will probably do the same, with Pearl his likely home to start 2021.

That’s a wrap
Mayfield and Ramirez aren’t going to move the needle much, but every team needs depth, and Mayfield, in particular, fills an important vacancy. You may follow Mayfield on Twitter and Instagram, as @jackmayfield8.
